Science-Oriented School Goes to Hall of Fame
Published Apr 10, 2009
Wags say the geeks shall inherit the Earth, but they’re not waiting that long at the National Inventors Hall of Fame School - Center for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Learning.
The STEM school will begin classes in fall 2009 with grades 5-6, but will end up with 500 students in grades 5-8 when it’s fully populated.
The school was aided by a $600,000 state grant to Akron Public Schools, one of five given for STEM schools in Ohio and the only one at the middle-school level, says Maryann Wolowiec, project manager.
“The schools will represent the entire demographic of the community. Because it’s a professional development school, it also will have professors from The University of Akron,” she says.
The school will take existing space at, as well as a new addition to, the National Inventors Hall of Fame Foundation downtown, giving students the chance to work on various projects and programs with inventors and mentors.
The location will make for easy interaction with the Akron Art Museum and the main branch of the Akron-Summit County Public Library, among other cultural and educational landmarks.
“We hope to produce students who are knowledgeable people and effective citizens,” Wolowiec says. “That’s done through an integrated, problem-based inquiry approach to learning. They will learn by working on problems, as well as reading and writing about them.”
